Mum's not looking & Silly Sammy wants me to go playing in the dam or creek - What can happen if you go swimming alone? ANSWERS: Slippery banks, I could fall in & be unable to get out- debris on bottom- I could hurt myself, bigger kids could push me in SAFETY RULE: When playing in or near water always make sure an adult is with you.
Silly Sammy has pushed a chair along & wants me to climb the pool fence! Why this is DANGEROUS even if you can swim? ANSWERS: I could fall in and not be able to reach the edge, I could slip & hit my head, another child might push me under SAFETY RULE: Always swim with a grown up around. (they may just hear your voice in their little head when this opportunity arises)
Silly Sammy jumped in the surf away from the flags? Where should YOU swim at the beach? What to do when in trouble in the surf, Who are lifeguards & what do they look like? ANSWERS: Swim between the flags - the lifeguards wear yellow & red & they will save you if you get into trouble. SAFETY RULE: Float/tread water and raise your hand in the air & keep it still to get the lifeguards attention.
Silly Sammy just ran & dived in the pool with his hands behind his back! Why is unsafe diving in pools, rivers, dams & even in shallow sections of surf so dangerous? ANSWER:- dangerous diving can hurt your neck (explain to children what this means)
Our friend is in the pool sinking & Silly Sammy jumped in to save her! Why is jumping in to save someone a bad idea? What should you do instead? ANSWER: If someone needs help do not get into the water. SAFETY RULE: Throw or reach to rescue & get help from a grown up fast.
Silly Sammy wants to play a game in the pool to see who can do the most laps underwater? What is dangerous about this game? ANSWER: shallow water blackout can happen if you hyperventilate & swim too far underwater - lack of oxygen to the brain causes person to pass out which easily leads to drowning. SAFETY RULE: Beware of games like this, if children want to play this they must be strictly supervised.
