Australian All Schools - June 2010

Four Wests Illawarra Aquatic Swim Club members (Kiera Eady, Zoe Elkerton, Alexis Mastro and David McKeon) made the trip up to the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane Queensland to compete in the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships from 6 to 11 June 2010.

All four swimmers flew up to Brisbane together (Go Team!) - they made it without incident (Sorry Nicholas and Jarrod but they didn’t put Alexis on the wrong plane). Caroline and I drove up on Saturday 5 June and met the swimmers at Brisbane Airport. We stayed in a cool "Queenslander" in Lota which was only about 15 minutes from Chandler Pool.

All four swimmers performed extremely well throughout the whole competition in both individual and relay events. They all enjoyed the experience and met many swimmers from other states.

David McKeon won Gold in the 17 - 19 years 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle individual events and 4 x 50 All Age, 4 x 50 freestyle, 4 x 100 freestyle and 4 x 50 medley relays. David also won Silver in 50m freestyle individual event and 10 x 50 freestyle relay.

Alexis Mastro won Gold in the 15 - 16 years 100m backstroke individual event and 4 x 50 medley relay. She also won Silver in the 50m backstroke individual event.

Zoe Elkerton won Gold in 15 - 16 years 100m freestyle individual event. She won Silver in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle individual events and 4 x 50 medley relay and 4 x 50 freestyle relay and bronze in the 4 x 100m relay.

Kiera Eady won a bronze medal in the 13 - 14 years 100m backstroke individual event.

All four swimmers went to an "Educational Excursion" to Dreamworld on the Gold Coast on Thursday. Swimmers from all the states went together. Just what they were educated in is anyone's guess. They had a great time running from one ride to the other. Apparently the white tigers were a non - event - they just "sat there doing nothing". I am not sure what they expected (the trainers have obviously have not done their job.... where was the entertainment?)

To end the week, all four swimmers went to a training session on Saturday morning at Moreton Bay College. They worked hard and ended the week with a good workout. They couldn’t believe how cold it was getting in and out of the pool and can now appreciate winters at the Uni pool.

When they were on their way home I asked them (they said I was interrogating them - I guess they were tired and just couldn’t talk anymore) if they could give me a quote as to what was their favourite part of the week or their best experience. It took some time but David said it was Sally's Lasagne and Dreamworld and the girls enjoyed Dreamworld and Alexis raved about her trip to Harbourtown for shopping.

They had fun participating in the Closing Ceremony and enjoyed competing in the relay events especially. We all had a good time and would like to thank Ron for his support during the week.
